Water Hazards For Young Children

Unfortunately each year many young children drown in swimming pools, other bodies of water, and standing water around the home area. Children must be watched by an adult at all times when in or near water. Children are very inquisitive and love to get themselves into trouble. They love to get there little frail bodies into buckets, bathtubs and such items. Did you know children may drown in an inch or 2 of water!

Always keep buckets and pails, especially 3 to 5-gallon buckets and diaper pails away from toddlers. Toilets are not just a favorite for dogs. Keep children away as they can drown in the bowl. Do you have fish? Make sure aquariums are placed high and above the reach of children. Children will be intrigued by the fish and may try to get in. Bathtubs, kids love to play in them, esp. with water and there toys. Always keep an eye on them and never leave them alone in a bathtub without any supervision. Bathtubs don't only pose a danger of drowning but danger of scorching hot water as well. Set your water heater thermostat so that the hottest temperature at the faucet is 1200F to avoid burns.

In conclusion, always remember to empty out any buckets, pails, and bathtubs completely after each use - do not leave them filled and unattended. Children will find a way to get in them. Learn CPR and know how to get emergency help. As a rule stay within an arm's length of your child. Teach others in the home to keep the bathroom door closed at all times. Install a hook-lock or doorknob cover on the outside of the door, to prevent toddlers from opening them. Do you own a hot tub or sauna? Use a lockable cover on a hot tub, spa, or whirlpool, or fence in all 4 sides as you would for a swimming pool. Watch children closely when they are playing near wells, open holes, or irrigation or drainage ditches. Fill in empty holes or have gates installed to protect your child from falling in.
